Ideation

Employing installational constructs to engage with viewers designs patterns on the projection canvas. "Nature Bloom" arises from the ambition to blur the lines between biological existence and digital abstraction, spawning an enveloping environment where transitory aspects of nature—illumination, silhouette, motion—converge with the creative capability of digital manufacturing. This endeavor responds to the friction between the natural and synthetic, the tangible and elusive, aiming to incite contemplation on the way technology influences our understanding of the natural surroundings. Through the integration of live motion detection, light illuminations, and interactive art installations, "Nature Bloom" encourages guests to transform from passive spectators into active contributors. The initiative aspires to redefine our interaction with digital art—not a static entity on a screen, but a vibrant, responsive biome that adapts and evolves with human occupancy.

  • 01 & 02

Week 1-2: Research & Initial Setup

Experiment with projection mapping and light interaction.

Identify and source materials: multiple matt glasses, flowers, light, and projectors.

  • Week 3-4: Motion Tracking & Coding Basics

Research and Implement motion-tracking using P5.js and what equipment is used to capture movement.

Develop code to generate dynamic projections based on movement. Test simple projection-mapping interactions on a surface.

    03 & 04

  • Week 6-7: Refinement & Enhancements

Adjust and refine real-time motion response. Experiment with light, shadow, and different projection angles.

Explore different generative visual styles to enhance immersion.

    06 & 07

  • Week 8: Concept Revision & Integration

Revise the concept based on midterm feedback.

Ensure natural materials and digital elements work seamlessly.

    08

  • Week 9: Final VIS 160A Milestone

Fully functional prototype: Motion tracking, projections, and physical installation integrated.

User testing: Invite small groups to interact and observe engagement.

Collect feedback for next quarter’s refinements.

    09

  • Week 11-12: Physical Build & Environmental Setup

Order additional materials (plants, reflective surfaces, projection screen).

Construct and finalize the installation structure.

    11&12

  • Week 13-14: Debugging & Optimization

Improve projection resolution and interaction responsiveness.

Optimize code for smoother motion-tracking performance.

Ensure lighting and projection angles enhance immersion.

    13 &14

  • Week 15: Midterm - Fully Functional Installation

Complete coded system integrating projections and physical materials.

All materials are fully assembled and interactions tested.

    15

  • Week 16-17: User Testing & Adjustments

Conduct audience testing and gather feedback.

Adjust interaction elements based on user experience.

    16 &17

  • Week 18: Final Debugging & Exhibition Prep

Run last-minute refinements based on feedback.

Ensure projection clarity, tracking responsiveness, and user flow.

    18

  • Week 19: Final 160B Presentation

The fully functional final piece is presented in the critique.

01

Discover

Brainstorming sessions in order to take their needs and company goals into account. Define the scope and objectives of the project and lays a fundamental foundation for everything that comes after.

Develop

Define the user experience, test and evaluate design concepts, and analyze how your designs will inform behavior and effect the experience of the user.

03

Define

Gather additional information about the ideal client, market opportunities and design sprint. Getting direct feedback from users themselves through user surveys and field activities.

02

Deliver

Determine design patterns, elements of template pages, different framework options, and work with developers to test design functionality.
